Kinowa arrived back at the Bear Park only to find her best friend Sunshine not feeling well. He had spent the night outside under the stars waiting for Kinowa's return. It was a rainy morning and when Kinowa saw Sunshine she knew something was wrong or at least different.
She burst into tears knowing deep down that her friend Sunshine might be dying. She hugged and petted him and assured him she would stay with him. She felt badly that she had not come home that night as Sunshine had been feeling ill the previous day.
She sat and cried with Sunshine in the cool misty morning. As she was getting cold, she coaxed Sunshine into the house. He didn't want to come in or couldn't as Kinowa realized shortly. His hind legs were fast asleep so Kinowa massaged them and helped him get up and inside the house. He plunked down by the glass door wall with a sigh and Kinowa cried some more. She was really afraid that this might be the day for Sunshine to pass on.
About a year earlier Kinowa had realized Sunshine would be passing on so she and Sunshine had made a pact. He would not pass on unless Kinowa was there and Kinowa agreed to be there and be present to coach him on. She also requested that he go after the snow had gone so that she could place him back into the earth from whence he had come.
It was now Springtime, memorial time, and all the agreements could be met.
Kinowa stayed with Sunshine all day. She cancelled her classes and was present for him as he lay there preparing to go.
Sunshine was breathing so hard and wanted so much to stay awake. Kinowa tried to help him eat some food and drink some water but to no avail. He just lay there. Kinowa comforted him so that his breathing was eased.
The rain continued and Kinowa and Sunshine rested. At times Sunshine would hold his head up as best he could until his shoulder would give way and he would roll his head to the floor. He did this over and over and over. Kinowa realized he was afraid to die and this was his attempt at staying present to this time.
With tears in her eyes Kinowa knew she needed to let go of Sunshine. Crying, she told him it was a great day to die if that's what he wanted. It was a peaceful day and she could be present all day. Or he could get well if that's what he wanted. She would assist him in that too. She truly surrendered the decision to Sunshine with no expectations.
The day lingered on and Kinowa called the doctor again. She had called earlier in the morning and he was busy. Now he had time and gave Kinowa some valuable insight. He told her sometimes living failure is disguised as lung trouble and that he could help Sunshine temporarily by giving him drugs . But, it would only be temporary. He also told her he could help Sunshine pass on if that's what she wanted.
Kinowa thanked the doctor for his gracious insight and wisdom declining his services and stayed by Sunshine's side.
About five o'clock as Sunshine continued to rest, Grandfather Sun lowered himself below the thick gray clouds warming Sunshine's body and soul in further preparation for moving on. Sunshine's breathing became easier and he rested quietly. Grandfather Sun shone on Kinowa's best friend as though he were blessing and cleansing him. Kinowa felt blessed as well.
A couple of hours passed and Grandfather Sun slowly set himself behind the Emerald Mountain. Twilight was about to break and just as the last light of Grandfather Sun was going to bed, Sunshine called out to Kinowa with a wheezing sound. It was time for him to go with Grandfather Sun. He reached out his paw to Kinowa as if to say goodbye and thank you. Kinowa held his paw as he extended his body fully to release his soul to depart with Grandfather Sun. Kinowa burst into tears and sat with the former vehicle of her best friend Sunshine the Sun Dog. She gathered herself, collected her thoughts and started coaching Sunshine to move towards the light. "Go to the Light, Sunny, Go to the Light," she said. She knew that the Great Spirit would take wonderful care of Sunshine and now he was truly free.
The next day Kinowa and three special friends created an oval resting place in Sunshine's Field, the field where he and Kinowa had played so often, romped in the snow, and smelled the wildflowers. As the four placed him in Mother Earth from whom he had come, Grandfather Sun split the white billowy clouds to bless the Sun Dog one last time. The four were surprised by the blessing and thankful. They placed some sweet grass and sage, an eagle feather, and two of Sunshine's favorite love spheres next to him. Kinowa and her friends sang songs, thanked Sunshine for being in their lives and covered him with a dark rich blanket of earth. Kinowa would always remember Sunshine's soft ears, his jingle, the smell of his fur, his love spheres, his smiley, white face, his one word barks, his field, and his never ending and constant love.
