There has been a great deal of discussion with regards to the Mayan calendar and it's hidden clue to the end of the world and possibly the end of time. The mystical date of December 21st, 2012 is forefront to this event.
Many have claimed that the year 2012 will bring about the Mayan apocalypse, a pole shift, earth change, cosmic convergence, and any other disaster one could think of. While any of these events is possible, it's very unlikely that the arrival of the year 2012 will not cause them. In fact, the year 2012 could bring a new era of spiritual awareness.
The Mayans had an elaborate system of calendars, which are no longer in use. The calendars evolved in complete isolation from those of the rest of the world, so there are no ties to the Gregorian calendar system.
The Mayan calendar system ended with the fall of the Mayan civilization. The Spanish destroyed most of the remaining knowledge of the calendar during their conquest in the 16th century. It was not until very recently, during the 1990s in fact, that archeologists have finally been able to fill in many of the gaps in our knowledge of the Mayan civilization, including the calendar system.
The Mayans were skilled mathematicians, and this shows in their calendar. Besides having a concept of zero (which the Romans had not grasped), they also had a firm grasp of modular arithmetic; they also worked extensively in base 20.
As impressive as this may be, even though they had a great skill at observing the heavens, their calendar had no relationship to lunar or seasonal cycles, and is only synchronized with the solar cycle year approximately.
The Mayans were aware of this discrepancy; they simply didn't feel a need to synchronize their calendar with the sun like the Old World civilizations did.
The Mayans developed 17 different calendars, some of them charting time accurately over a span of more than ten million years. The Mayans primarily used only three, which include The Long Count, The Haab, and the Tzolkin.
The Long Count was principally used for historical purposes, since it can define any date for millennia in the past and future.
The Haab was a civil calendar based on a year of 360 days consisting of 18 periods of 20 days.
The Tzolkin calendar was used for ceremonial purposes, which had 20 periods of 13 days.
The Mayan Long Count calendar starts as "0.0.0.0.0", and ends as "13.0.0.0.0." This date, translated into our 365-day Gregorian calendar, corresponds to December 21st, 2012. It is the date that ends one precession of the equinox that began 26,000 years ago, the last time that the winter solstice sun crossed the center of our Milky Way galaxy.
Our past has been so eruptive that there are few records that can substantiate life at that time. December 22nd, 2012 marks the start of the Long Count's next iteration.
Why did the Mayans select this particular date as the end of the calendar? Being devoted sky watchers taught them that the sun will conjunct the crossing point of Galactic Equator and ecliptic on that precise day.
The last time a galactic event of such magnitude occurred and was recorded was about 12,500 years ago, when the civilization of Egypt suddenly rose after an event of galactic magnitude destroyed an advanced civilization known to many as Atlantis. This event was encoded in the Sphinx at the Giza plateau. This event occurred during the conjunction of the summer solstice sun with the galactic center--the summer sun signifying the replenishment and abundance of lost resources, buried wisdom, and a new civilization.In the approaching 2012 winter solstice conjunction, we will experience nothing less than a total rebirth of the planet and our consciousness, at proportions so extreme that our linear brains cannot possibly conceive of the enormity and complexity. The wisdom will not be based on ancient paradigms, but on a totally new multidimensional consciousness.
Many believe that this consciousness will allow us to function in the fourth and fifth dimensions with third-eye activation and a global consciousness that is shared through a connection of our heart chakras.
The Mayan people predicted thousands of years ago according to their reading of the celestial objects: the awakened people are going to complete the holy mission of "Earth purification". On December 21, 2012, human beings are going to enter a new civilization.
